Adding a QR code to your banner? Enter how far away people will scan it, and we’ll tell you the minimum QR code size, plus tips so it scans reliably.
How It Works
- The 10:1 rule: a QR code scans reliably from about 10 times its width. To scan from 10 ft, make it at least 12 inches wide.
- Quiet zone: leave a blank border around the code; without it, phones may not recognize it.
- Short links scan better: a short URL makes a simpler code with bigger squares.
QR Code Tips for Banners
- Place the code where people can get close enough to scan it, usually at eye level.
- Use dark squares on a light background; light codes on dark backgrounds don’t scan on every phone.
- Test-scan your design on screen at full size before you order.
- Add a few words next to it, like “Scan for our menu,” so people know why to scan.
QR Code Size FAQ
How big should a QR code be on a banner?
About 1/10 of the scanning distance. For people scanning from 5 ft, at least 6 inches; from 10 ft, at least 12 inches.
Can people scan a QR code from far away?
Only if it’s big enough. For a banner seen mainly from far away, a short web address in large letters is often easier than a QR code.
Where should I put the QR code?
Near the bottom or one side, away from hems and grommets, and at a height people can reach with their phone.
